Why is my sight-reading so bad?
If you can play pieces far harder than anything you can read, nothing is wrong with you. Something specific is wrong with the way reading was practised, and there are only about seven candidates.

First: this is not a talent problem
The belief that reading is innate is common and it is worth dismantling before anything else, because it is the reason people stop practising it.
Reading is a learned decoding skill, structurally similar to reading text. Nobody concludes that a slow reader of English lacks a gift; the assumption is that they have not read enough. Music is the same, with one complication: it is entirely possible to become an accomplished pianist while barely reading at all, so the deficit can grow for years without being noticed.
Which is exactly why the deficit is usually so large. It is not that reading resisted practice. It is that reading was never the thing being practised.
The seven causes
1. You learned pieces by repetition, not by reading
This is the big one. The normal way to learn a piece is to work through it slowly, hands separately, a few bars at a time, repeating until it is secure. That is an excellent way to learn a piece. It involves reading each bar perhaps twice, and then playing it from memory forty times.
A pianist with a substantial repertoire built that way may have read a genuinely small number of unfamiliar bars in their life. The cure is not subtle: read new music, daily, and stop expecting repertoire practice to do it for you.
2. You stop to correct mistakes
Every lesson you ever had trained this. A wrong note appeared, you went back, you fixed it, you were praised. For learning a piece, correct. For reading, ruinous — because the beat does not come back, and a reader who stops has stopped reading.
Watch yourself honestly for one page. Count the stops rather than the wrong notes. Most people are startled by the number.
The fix is to practise against something that will not wait, and to deliberately let errors go past. It feels wrong for about a week.
3. Your eyes are on your hands
Every glance at the keyboard costs your place on the page, and the recovery costs more than the glance. Pianists who look down are usually doing it to check a leap, which means the underlying gap is keyboard geography rather than reading.
The fix is to learn the keyboard by feel — find intervals by hand shape and distance rather than by sight — and then to make looking down useless by keeping your eyes moving forward. See reading ahead.
4. Your bass clef is much weaker than your treble
Extremely common, and it has an obvious cause: most beginner method books put the melody in the right hand, so the treble staff gets several times more reading practice from the very first year. Ten years later the imbalance is enormous.
It also hides well. An average accuracy figure across both hands can look respectable while one clef is near perfect and the other is close to guesswork. Measured separately, the gap is often thirty percentage points or more.

5. You are reading pitches instead of patterns
If you identify notes one at a time — line, letter, key — you will always be limited by how fast you can do that, and it is not fast enough. Fluent readers see a scale fragment or a broken chord as a single object with a single hand shape.
The tell: reading gets disproportionately harder as the music gets faster, rather than as it gets more complex. That is a throughput limit, and pattern recognition is what raises it.
6. You only ever read in easy keys
Four sharps is not intrinsically harder than none; it is only less familiar. But because it feels harder, it gets avoided, so it stays unfamiliar — and the avoidance is self-sealing.
The fix is exposure, and it is quicker than expected. A few hundred bars in a key is generally enough to stop it feeling foreign.
7. You have no feedback loop
Reading is hard to self-assess while doing it, because the resource that fails is attention and attention is fully occupied. Afterwards, memory of what went wrong is poor and biased toward the mistakes that sounded worst rather than the ones that mattered.
So most people practise reading with essentially no information about what is failing, and default to practising the thing they already believe is wrong. When that belief is incorrect — and cause 4 above is very often the real answer where cause 5 was assumed — months go into the wrong exercise.
How to find out which one is yours
Play one unfamiliar passage, once, against a metronome, without stopping. Then answer four questions about the run rather than about your feelings afterwards.
- 1How many times did you stop or hesitate? More than once or twice per page points at cause 2.
- 2Compare the two clefs separately. A gap larger than roughly ten percentage points points at cause 4.
- 3Were the wrong notes near-misses or unrelated? Neighbouring wrong notes suggest the pattern was right and the position was off; unrelated ones suggest note-by-note decoding, cause 5.
- 4Were notes late rather than wrong? Consistent lateness with correct pitches means reading throughput, cause 5 again, or no eye-hand span, cause 3.
This is difficult to do reliably by ear and by memory, which is the entire reason the drills here grade the five dimensions separately, report which one is the bottleneck, and name the next drill to fix it. The four-bar test takes about a minute and needs no account.
What improvement actually feels like
The first change is usually not accuracy. It is that reading stops feeling frantic — the sense of being permanently one step behind the music goes away before the note errors do, because it comes from the eye-hand span rather than from recognition.
Accuracy follows, unevenly, and typically in the specific area being practised rather than across the board. Then the improvement generalises, and this is where most people underestimate their progress: reading feels no easier, because they have quietly moved on to harder material.
Which is the last argument for measuring rather than judging by feel. The subjective sense of difficulty stays roughly constant no matter how much better you get, because the difficulty is what you choose.
Common questions
Why can I play advanced pieces but not sight-read simple ones?
Because learning a piece and reading a piece use different processes. Learning uses slow practice and repetition until the passage is stored in memory and in the hands; reading requires converting notation to sound continuously, at speed, with no repetition available.
Time spent on repertoire builds the first and barely touches the second. It is normal for a pianist with several years of lessons to read several grades below what they can perform.
Should I sight-read music that is much easier than my repertoire?
Yes, and probably easier than feels reasonable. Material that forces you to stop is training the wrong habit, so the useful level is one you can play through without hesitating — commonly two or three grades below what you perform.
Raise it when you can hold a steady tempo through a page with roughly eighty to ninety percent of the notes correct and no pauses.
Does learning to read faster hurt playing by ear?
No. They draw on largely different processes and pianists who do both are not worse at either. What can happen is that a reader stops listening as carefully, because the page is answering questions the ear used to answer.
Keeping some deliberate ear work in your practice is enough to prevent that. Being able to read is not a threat to being able to hear.
